Today I wanted to talk about all things regarding exfoliating. To some this probably seems like a boring topic, but I think it’s an important one and might even explain why you are not seeing results with your skincare regimen. It shocks me to know that there are many people out there who choose to skip exfoliating, don’t know the benefits of it, or dare I say it, have never exfoliated in their lifetime. If this is you, I urge you to stick around and learn why exfoliating may just be one of the most important steps in your skin care regime.

“I think it’s an important topic and might even explain why you are not seeing results with your skincare regimen.”

What is exfoliating?

It is the process of removing dead skin cells from the skin’s surface. There are 2 main processes when it comes to exfoliating, and both are pretty effective. You can either exfoliate mechanically with the use of abrasive scrubs, or you can chemically exfoliate by using a product that contains special kinds of acids that dissolve and remove the dead skin cells without the abrasive scrubbing. Both get the job done and leave your skin feeling better than before.

Why is exfoliating important?

Not only does exfoliating make your skin feel much smoother, but it also helps to clear your skin. As you age, the process of cell generation slows down. It takes your skin longer to shed, leaving it dull, dry, and rough. The buildup of these old skin cells can trap oil in your pores, which can lead to blemishes and acne. Exfoliating is used as a tool to reduce and remove the excess skin cells. When done properly, exfoliation uncovers fresh cells underneath the old, and this is exactly what your skin needs in order for your other skincare products to work.

Think of it this way; If you aren’t exfoliating regularly, your pores are continuing to be clogged and your fresh skin cells are being blocked. If you were to apply your other skin care products to skin that isn’t exfoliated, those products can’t be fully absorbed into the deeper layers of your skin. In the end, your skincare won’t have the opportunity to work to their full potential and you will most likely be wasting money on products that won’t do much for your skin. I don’t know about you, but that sounds like a waste of money to me!

How to choose the right exfoliant?

Before I launched Kalaia and dove deeper into the skin care industry, I believed that an exfoliant wasn’t properly working unless it contained hard, rough particles. I always thought that sandpaper like consistency was what did the job. Fast forward to the creation of our Kalaia products, and I learned that an exfoliant doesn’t have to be harsh and full of nitty gritty particles. Although scrubbing away the dead skin cells is important, it is more important to make sure you’re still being gentle on your skin, and not leaving it more irritated than before you started.

Maybe I’m biased, but I’m a huge fan of Kalaia’s Fresh Canvas – Exfoliating Powder that incorporates best of both worlds. We have combined natural physical exfoliants such as powdered licorice root, rose petals, and apricot seeds, with one of the few natural sources of alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) – the hibiscus flower to create a perfect exfoliating experience. These ingredients work together in harmony to remove impurities, excess oil, and dead skin cells. Not only is it effective but it’s also gentle on your skin. When formulating this product, I wanted to incorporate ingredients that leave your skin feeling smooth, but also with a beautiful and natural glow.

Bottom line, I think it’s so important to invest in an exfoliant that’s going to gently rub away your skin’s impurities and benefit your skin in the long run. Exfoliating has always been a skin care step that I look forward to. I have oily skin, so I use Kalaia’s Fresh Canvas – Exfoliating Powder every night and I’m always left feeling like I have a fresh canvas to work with once I’m done.

I hope that this read wasn’t as boring as you thought it might be and my fingers are crossed that it has convinced some of you to invest in an exfoliant. Trust me, it will be well worth your while. If you enjoyed this post and want to read more regarding skin care, lifestyle and business go ahead and add your email to the email list to be notified when another post is up on the blog!
